Trust Yourself You Can Do It

How do you think you can motivate other persons to have the willingness to learn English or other foreign languages? Well, I could never have imagined that there were such ways to keep motivating my students. I just learned from the experience that sometimes I was successful enough, but sometimes it’s still difficult to do. No matter what, just give it a shot 🙂

Once, I taught this student, many years ago I think, well I don’t remember, but I do still remember how he was very angry and disappointed because at that time he thought that English was very difficult for him. Even though he already tried to learn it, he still failed and he complained me, why he was accepted as the student at that school where he belonged to at that time if actually his English score was not good enough to fulfill the requirement to enroll the school which finally demanded him a lot to master English. For a second I was stunned, trying to figure out what I should answer him, because I could see that he was very afraid of this demand (finishing his English class with minimum score meanwhile he thought it was very difficult for him to learn it). I was in junior year working as a teacher at that time and I eventually just told him, “Well, you are already here now. You have the opportunity to learn English with me and I promise you that English will be very important and useful for you, especially for your future. You just need to be patient, don’t be afraid, trust me you can do it and of course, don’t forget to pray.”
I couldn’t do a lot at that time, that’s all that I could do and I realized that the presence of me as my student’s facilitator in the class is not only about transferring my knowledge but also motivating them, reminding them to keep their spirit high, and being there for them when they have their problems.

Years after that, even a couple months ago, I still met him on the social media, and he admitted that he finally realized how English’s very useful for him now and he’s very grateful for our meeting in the past. I also thank him for being patient enough to struggle with English and trusting for all I said.

It’s a happy ending story at the end.

On Friday, January 29, 2016, from 08.00 to 11:30 some English lecturers went to SMK Taruna Sakti, Sadang Highway, Babakancikao, Mulyamekar District, Purwakarta 41118. This trip has a goal to to fulfill one of the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi which has to be taken by each leacturer in each semester. The lecturers of English PERBANAS Institute performed community service in the form of implementation of Grammar Clinic & Assistance TOEFL-Like for students of SMK Taruna Sakti, Sadang Highway, Babakancikao District, Mulyamekar District, Purwakarta 41118. The objectives of mentoring the grammar clinic and performing TOEFL-Like for students of SMK Taruna Sakti are to organize the provision of material in a simple grammar and to perform TOEFL-Like.

Community service activities related to the contribution of the knowledge possessed by the lecturers are to give enlightenment to the community, especially for students of SMK Taruna Sakti in reviewing and practice grammar relating to the construction problem of TOEFL-Like, so that they can find out and know about the types of TOEFL and TOEFL-Like.

Implementation of Grammar Clinic & Assistance TOEFL-Like for Students of SMK Taruna Sakti Purwakarta
This training aims to help the SMK Taruna Sakti Purwakarta in its efforts to improve the mastery of English for their students. In addition, this event also aims to provide opportunities for the students of SMK Taruna Sakti Purwakarta for training in a simple language that is designed and oriented towards the mastery of English to take the TOEFL-Like.

Planning, preparation, and execution of this activity lasted for approximately two weeks, from Tuesday, January 12, 2016 to Friday, January 29, 2016. The time required is related to the allocation of time taken by the Perbanas Institute including English Language Laboratory Unit (ULBI) Perbanas Institute led by Miss Adelina, SS., M. Hum and lecturers of English PERBANAS Institute for
1. planning and preparing teaching materials and providing TOEFL-Like materials;
2. approaching the Principal of SMK Taruna Sakti Purwakarta, Mr. Eko Bagus Kurniawan, S. Pd;
3. setting up the necessary equipment in order to perform TOEFL-Like, such as: printing TOEFL-Like materials, preparing a tape recorder, and cassette TOEFL-Like;
4. having meetings among lecturers of English PERBANAS Institute to organize Grammar Clinic teaching materials; and
5. coordinating with the department in Perbanas Institute to organize transport from Jakarta to Purwakarta and in vice versa.

In addition, Perbanas Institute lecturers have to adjust the timing of Grammar Clinic & Assistance TOEFL-Like with the time provided by the SMK Taruna Sakti Purwakarta in giving coaching and mentoring activities so it is expected to not interfere with teaching and learning process (PBM) in the school. Participants of Grammar Clinic coaching and TOEFL-Like mentoring amounted to 119 (one hundred and nineteen) consisting of students from different departments. They are Broadcasting Engineering, Mechanical Light Vehicle Engineering, Motorcycle Engineering, and Accounting. For the purposes of Grammar Clinic coaching & TOEFL-Like mentoring, the students of SMK Taruna Sakti Purwakarta are divided into 5 different classrooms.

By imposing a vision that one of them is to put forward the procurement of ability to speak English, a school has committed to enter into a realm of management that is no longer based on the standards and demands of local quality and require human resources who are able to understand the ins and outs of the information required in the domain so that it can support their performance in realizing the commitment of the institution. Pantai Anyer terletak di Kecamatan Anyer, Kabupaten Serang. Sedangkan, pantai Carita berlokasi di Kecamatan Carita, Kabupaten Pandeglang. Bila dari Jakarta, maka tempat wisata yang lebih dekat untuk dijangkau adalah tempat wisata pantai Anyer daripada pantai Carita. THE USE OF E-LEARNING FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCESS

One of facilities that should be applied in formal education e.g. university is called E-learning. It is necessary to be understood that e-learning is able to be defined as a learning system with the use of electronics. Usually this learning uses computers. Learning system by using e-learning system can be provided as part or all of the materials being taught. For the whole materials, e-learning system is initially given in an open university. As for formal education, e-learning system is given only as a supplement outside the teaching and learning process in the classroom. E-learning is a media electronic to support the students’ facility of study. E-learning is equipped as a forum of discussion, to collect the task, and giving materials. E-learning can be an innovation to provide students’ means of learning. In addition e-learning can make the students easy to study everywhere.

A university has to have an official site that all the students are able to sign and log in if the process of teaching and learning uses e-learning system. Based on that site some of the lecturers can communicate with their students. The lecturers also use e-learning in different ways of teaching. Some of them use e-learning as a supplement of their teaching materials. Others use e-learning as a substitute way if the lecturers could not come to the class, then the process of teaching and learning is replaced by the tasks given to the students. Some other lecturers use e-learning system in the way that students have to read the materials, perform the exercises based on the materials, and submit the results to the lecturer. The lecturer checks the students’ works, returns the works, and discuss the works. Based on the students’ works, the lecturer could give the score. The process of e-learning system will be discussed in paragraphs below.

In e-learning usually lecturers give the students some introduction about the lesson that will be studied in the class. The students discuss the materials or problem that are requested by lecturers. The students can write something that relate to the topic on the discussion. In addition the students can give some explanation about the lesson. Then, the students can post it in e-learning. All of the members can read that posting. In addition the reader must give take an opinion on the other students’ explanation.

E-learning as the facility, in some cases, can make the students easy to study. Most of the students appreciate this system. Students can submit their assignment easier. This method can be faster than if they write down on paper. E-learning is also provided by due date. It makes the students be more discipline to submit their task. In addition e-learning will minimalize the use of paper. In Indonesia situation, Open University of Univeritas Terbuka has been providing e-learning facilities for its students.

The Indonesia Government allows universities to use e-learning system. Republic Act no. 20 of 2003 on National Education System, article 31 states that the distance education is able to be hold on all lines, levels and types of education. Moreover, distance education organized in various forms, modes and coverage hold facilities and services supported by learning and assessment system which ensures the quality of graduates in accordance with national education standards. The form of distance education includes educational programs in writing (correspondence), radio, audio / video, TV and / or network-based computer. So e-learning system in Indonesia is a part of distance learning programs that the government has established. In its initial formation, e-learning is used as one of the systems applied by open university. It is stated that e-learning system in Indonesia can also substitute the position of a lecturer in front of the class.

Many lecturers in Perbanas Institute use this system to teach their students. Some of them because of their jobs outside or their needs can not attend the class to teach their students. The students can study the material by e-learning. In fact, this method makes the lecturers leave more than 50% of the class. In average most of the students become lazier to come to the class if their lecturers are used to study using e-learning in the class. E-learning in this idea gives a bad influence to students. One lecturer who has also a position used this e-learning system when he left his class for five times. He also provides materials for students to do as homework, in fact, when the students ask for feedback, this lecturer could not give the feedback because of his job he never checked the students’ works. In Perbanas Institute the implementation of e-learning for this type of lecturer is not effective as a study method.

Perbanas Institute must be active and proactive to socialize to their students and lecturers the purpose of e-learning system. In reality both most of the lecturers and the students still do not understand the purpose of e-learning system and how to use e-learning well. A team that is responsible with the e-learning system and training must be formed. It is not just a fun idea it should be done seriously. Harvard University and MIT University are examples of universities which put e-learning system is just a complementary of the teaching and learning materials in the curriculum. However, finally e-leaning is simply a tool for students easier to study outside the class and it is not only as a substitute way if the lecturer cannot teach in front of the class. Hopefully the idea of e-learning system either in western universities or Indonesian universities will not be confused anymore.




Sedikit Cerita Tentang Film ‘Ketika Mas Gagah Pergi’

Siapa yang tak kenal Helvy Tiana Rosa? Kalau rekan-rekan belum mengenalnya, saya akan bantu rekan-rekan berkenalan dengan kakak Helvy. Saya ketemu kak Helvy beberapa kali, tapi hanya satu kali sempat berfoto bersama dengannya beberapa tahun silam saat kami sama-sama hadir menonton Teater Koma di Komunitas Salihara, Pejaten, Pasar Minggu. Kak Helvy yang saya kenal adalah seorang dosen, penulis, dan sekarang tulisannya pun diangkat ke Layar Lebar, tertuang di dalam sebuah film menarik bertemakan religi berjudul ‘Katika Mas Gagah Pergi’, sama persis dengan judul tulisan asli kak Helvy.

Film ‘Ketika Mas Gagah Pergi’ adalah sebuah film yang dibuat dengan menggunakan dana dari crowd funding (istilah ini lagi ngetren, silakan digoogle apabila belum mengenalnya^_^). Saya, walaupun belum pernah membaca bukunya, dari awal mendengar bahwa kak Helvy sedang membuat film ini sudah berniat akan menontonnya, bukan hanya karena saya ‘ngefan’ sama kak Helvy, tapi juga karena saya yakin film yang sudah ramai dibicarakan orang sejak awal proses pembuatannya ini, pasti akan menjadi sebuah tontonan menarik. Akhirnya, minggu lalu saya sempatkan menonton film ini di sebuah bioskop di daerah Kemang, Jakarta Selatan (film Indonesia masih kurang mendapat tempat di hati orang Indonesia sendiri, sehingga bioskop yang memutarnya biasanya tidak sebanyak bioskop yang memutar film film pop Amerika).

Ketika Mas Gagah Pergi adalah sebuah judul yang sederhana menurut saya, dan ternyata film ini memang mengisahkan tentang seorang Gagah yang pergi meninggalkan keluarganya ke Ternate selama beberapa bulan. Walau demikian isi cerita film kebanyakan bercerita tentang bagaimana kemudian Gagah pulang kembali ke tengah keluarganya, namun sosok Gagah yang kembali dari Ternate ini berubah menjadi seorang laki-laki yang lebih religius. Perubahan pada diri Gagah inilah yang kemudian menjadi konflik di dalam film yang berdurasi 99 menit ini. Sepanjang film diperlihatkan bagaimana reaksi keluarga, terutama respon kaget Gita, adik perempuan Gagah satu-satunya yang sejak kecil sudah sangat dekat dengan Gagah. Gita diperankan oleh seorang wanita mungil bernama Aquino Umar dengan ciamik, sementara yang berperan sebagai Gagah adalah Hamas Syahid. Mereka berdua adalah pendatang baru di dunia perfilman. Selain mereka berdua tentu saja banyak bintang film lainnya yang ikut mendukung film ini, di antaranya yang sudah lebih kita kenal ada Epi Kusnandar, Mathias Muchus, Nungky Kususmastuti, Wulan Guritno, Ustadz Salim A. Fillah, Shireen Sungkar, dan Irfan Hakim.

Jadi tunggu apalagi? Mumpung filmnya masih ada di bioskop, sok atuh ditonton filmnya, insyaa Allah bermanfaat sekalian kita mendukung perfilman Indonesia di negeri kita sendiri.

MENYIAPKAN KEMAMPUAN BERBAHASA INGGRIS MAHASISWA & LULUSAN PERBANAS INSTITUTE DALAM MENGHADAPI MASYARAKAT EKONOMI ASEAN 2015

Dalam menghadapi Masyarakat Ekonomi ASEAN 2015, salah satu yang harus dipersiapkan para pelaku bisnis adalah kemampuan berkomunikasi. Kemampuan berkomunikasi baik lisan maupun tulisan adalah suatu keharusan bagi pelaku bisnis yang harus berinteraksi dengan kolega baik lokal, nasional maupun internasional. Salah satu bahasa internasional yang pasti dipergunakan untuk berkomunikasi bagi warga bangsa ASEAN tentu saja adalah Bahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu, salah satu kecakapan yang sangat penting dipersiapkan oleh para pelaku ekonomi, termasuk pelaku dunia perbankan, di dalam menghadapi Masyarakat Ekonomi ASEAN 2015 tersebut adalah kemampuan berbahasa Inggris. Dengan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris yang memadai baik lisan dan tulisan, tentu akan sangat membantu mereka di dalam berkomunikasi dengan baik.

Sebagai salah satu perguruan tinggi yang fokus di bidang keuangan dan perbankan, Perbanas Institute diharapkan mampu menyiapkan tenaga yang handal di bidang tersebut dengan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris yang mumpuni. Berkaitan dengan penyiapan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris tersebut, Perbanas Institute mempunyai sebuah unit yaitu  Unit Lab. Bahasa Inggris (ULBI) yang diberikan tugas untuk mengelola kegiatan belajar mengajar Bahasa Inggris di Perbanas Institute. Beberapa kegiatan yang yang diorganisasikan oleh ULBI tersebut diharapkan mampu meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris mahasiswa dan lulusan di dalam menghadapi persaingan dunia kerja maupun di dalam menghadapi Masyarakat Ekonomi ASEAN 2015.

Pertama, penyelenggaraan mata kuliah Bahasa Inggris sebagai salah satu mata kuliah yang wajib ditempuh oleh mahasiswa. Hal ini penting karena dengan demikian mahasiswa selama mengikuti perkuliahan akan mendapatkan kesempatan belajar Bahasa Inggris dengan syarat kelulusan tertentu. Di Perbanas Institute, mahasiswa mesti menempuh mata kuliah Bahasa Inggris I dan II yang dilanjutkan dengan mengambil mata kuliah Bahasa Inggris untuk Profesional. Di dalam mengikuti mata kuliah tersebut mahasiswa belajar materi kuliah yang dapat meningkatkan kemampuan mereka di dalam menggunakan Bahasa Inggris yang berkaitan dengan pekerjaan di masa datang seperti introducing self and others (making contacts), telephoning, business letters, job interview dan business report. Tidak hanya mahasiswa belajar menulis tetapi juga mempraktekkan kemampuan lisan mereka, karena pada saat ujian tengah atau akhir semester ada ujian yang disebut oral presentation, terutama untuk materi job interview dan business report.

Kedua, ULBI juga memberikan beberapa kegiatan yang berkaitan dengan memberikan kesempatan kepada mahasiswa untuk mempraktekkan Bahasa Inggris mereka baik lisan maupun tulisan misalnya dengan mengadakan English Speaking Days untuk melatih kemampuan lisan mahasiswa Perbanas Institute. Kemudian dengan Wall Gazette untuk mengasah kemampuan menulis mahasiswa. Dengan mengikuti kegiatan-kegiatan tersebut mahasiswa dapat melatih kemampuan aktif berbahasa mereka yaitu berbicara dan menulis. Seperti diketahui bersama kemampuan berbahasa yang sangat menunjang ke depan tidak lagi hanya kemampuan pasif (mendengar dan membaca) tetapi juga kemampuan aktif (menulis dan mendengar). Oleh karenanya kedua kemampuan aktif tersebut harus terus menerus dilatih karena hanya dengan latihan saja maka kemampuan seseorang akan meningkat.

Ketiga, Perbanas Institute mempersyaratkan kelulusan tes TOEFL® ITP dengan syarat kelulusan skor tertentu yaitu ≥450. Dengan mensyaratkan skor tersebut sebagai syarat menyelesaikan kuliah maka mahasiswa diharuskan menyiapkan diri untuk melatih kemampuan Bahasa Inggris terutama mendengar, tata bahasa dan membaca karena tiga kecakapan tersebut merupakan materi tes dalam TOEFL® ITP tersebut. Tanpa menyiapkan diri dengan baik sebelum menghadapi tes, mustahil bagi mahasiswa untuk mendapatkan skor yang tinggi dalam tes. Itu seperti akan mengikuti ujian praktek untuk mendapatkan SIM tanpa berlatih mengemudi terlebih dahulu. Sesuatu yang sudah dapat dibayangkan hasilnya yaitu kegagalan.

Dukungan dan keterlibatan dari semua pihak di kampus Perbanas Institute, baik pimpinan maupun karyawan tentu saja sangat diharapkan untuk keberhasilan semua usaha dalam rangka mempersiapkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris mahasiswa dan terutama lulusan Perbanas Institute. Semua karyawan misalnya dapat mulai membiasakan penggunaan Bahasa Inggris dalam kegiatan sehari-hari di kampus terutama dalam berkomunikasi sederhana seperti greetings atau asking simple questions. Dengan demikian penggunaan Bahasa Inggris dari hari ke hari akan menjadi kebiasaan di kampus yang tentu saja akan memberikan lingkungan yang sangat baik bagi mahasiswa di dalam melatih kemampuan mereka.




Yuuk…, nulis yuukkk….

Mau nulis apa sih? Gak ada ide deh. Hadeuhh…., stuck nie. Sering banget ya kita denger kata-kata itu. Apalagi kalau sudah ada kewajiban yang ada hubungannya dengan tulis menulis. Wah bisa mati kutu ya. Apalagi klo nulisnya kudu yang serius. Yang pake referensi panjang, butuh semedi dulu buat memahami, baru kemudian menuangkannya dalam tulisan.

Susah gak sih nulis itu. Jawabnya gampang-gampang susah. Dibilang gampang juga enggak. Tapi mo dibilang susah harusnya sih enggak ya. Pengalaman pribadi nie, sebenarnya sejak sekolah sudah sering banget nulis. Beberapa kali pernah mewakili Kecamatan Cepu untuk lomba mengarang sampai tingkat Karesidenan Pati. Lumayan kan hihihi…. Tapi ya gitu deh suka kumat malesnya.

Belajar dari Prof. Eko, bahwa menulis itu dapat diawali dengan yang paling sederhana. Misal nulis status di media sosial, yang awalnya mungkin hanya sekian karakter. Kemudian bisa nambah lebih banyak, micro blog, blog atau apalah itu. Trus Prof. Eko juga bilang, jangan pusing-pusing dengan ide, tulis aja. Tulislah sesuatu yang kamu suka. Yang gak pake baca buku pun sudah akan mengalir berkata-kata. Yang dekat dengan keseharian kita. Nah, suatu saat mungkin bisa meningkat. Ditambah dengan beberapa referensi, maka kualitas tulisan akan meningkat. Awalnya dari kebiasaan, ngomongin dulu masalah kuantitas, baru selanjutnya meningkat dari sisi kualitas.

Nah, itu yang sekarang sedang saya praktekkan. Berhubung saya suka jalan-jalan, maka saya coba menuangkan pengalaman jalan-jalan ini dalam tulisan. Bahasanya pun saya sesuaikan dengan bahasa ala-ala jalan-jalan. Simpel dan mudah dipahami. Niat awalnya cuma mau menuliskan pengalaman selama perjalanan, mumpung masih fresh, kejadian-keadian yang mungkin tidak tergambarkan dalam foto, bisa dituangkan dalam tulisan. Mungkin suatu saat dapat dibaca kembali, klo lagi kangen ngetrip (tapi gak punya ongkos). Biasanya tulisan pengalaman perjalanan ini juga saya tautkan ke link media sosial saya. Siapa tahu ada yang butuh referensi perjalanan yang pernah saya lakukan.

Menulis ini juga berbanding lurus dengan membaca. Karena kebiasaan membaca ini akan membuat kita punya banyak referensi untuk menulis. Saya memang lebih suka baca majalah karena isinya lebih bervariasi. Sekarang lagi belajar menulis artikel-artikel traveling yang biasanya dimuat di majalah. Siapa tahu suatu saat nanti pengalaman perjalanan saya dapat dimuat di majalah (ngarep :D). Sumber bacaan sekarang juga luar biasa banyak loh, baik yang hardcopy atau softcopy. Dengan modal jempol aja kita bisa menjelajahi dunia maya, yang sarat dengan info bermanfaat.

Selanjutnya adalah konsisten. Kebiasaan menulis sebaiknya memang dilakukan secara terus menerus. Itu sebabnya saya mencoba untuk terus menulis di blog dosen Perbanas ini. Temanya pun beragam, dari yang sesuai dengan background saya, sampai dengan tulisan santai ala perjalanan saya. Tiap bulan saya targetkan ada 1 ato 2 tulisan. Yang bener-bener tulisan ya, bukan sekedar copas link dari internet, trus dimasukkin ke blog. Karena disinilah sebenarnya konsistensi kita diuji. Dan saya nulis juga buka ngarep dapat reward (tapi kalo dapat ya alhamdulillah, bisa buat nambah ongkos jalan-jalan saya hahahhaha…). Reward nomor sekian lah, karena selama ini saya melihat tidak pernah ada yang rugi dalam menulis.

Jadi, yuukkk nulis yukk.., gak usah yang susah-susah dulu, yang belum-belum sudah bikin parno. Mulai dari sekarang, mulai dari tulisan yang paling sederhana, makin tambah referensi suatu saat kualitas tulisan kita pun akan bertambah. Peer besar saya sekarang adalah nulis yang bener-bener serius, yang memang menjadi tuntutan akan profesi saya sebagai dosen. Memang butuh usaha yang besar, selain harus mengumpulkan referensi yang berkualitas, juga membutuhkan waktu untuk memahaminya. Entah kenapa ya klo baca majalah dan novel itu bisa tahan berjam-jam. Coba deh baca jurnal, baru 5 menit mata langsung berasa 5 watt hahhaha…. Tapi tetep kudu cemunguuuttt….

Seminar dan Prosiding

Kriteria untuk seminar/simposium/lokakarya internasional dan nasional adalah sebagai berikut.

a. Internasional
1) Diselenggarakan oleh asosiasi profesi, atau perguruan tinggi, atau lembaga ilmiah yang bereputasi.
2) Steering committee (Panitia Pengarah) terdiri dari para pakar yang berasal dari berbagai negara.
3) Bahasa pengantar yang digunakan adalah bahasa resmi PBB (Arab, Inggris, Perancis, Rusia, Spanyol dan Tiongkok).
4) Pemakalah dan peserta berasal dari berbagai negara (paling sedikit 4 (empat) negara).

b. Nasional
1) Diselenggarakan oleh asosiasi profesi, atau perguruan tinggi, atau lembaga ilmiah yang bereputasi.
2) Steering committee ( Panitia Pengarah) yang terdiri dari para pakar.
3) Bahasa pengantar yang digunakan adalah bahasa Indonesia.
4) Pemakalah dan peserta berasal dari berbagai perguruan tinggi/lembaga ilmiah lingkup nasional.

 

Prosiding yang dipublikasikan harus memenuhi syarat-syarat buku ilmiah yang dipublikasikan, yang dipaparkan berikut ini.

a. Untuk Prosiding Seminar Nasional
1). memuat makalah lengkap,
2). ditulis dalam Bahasa Indonesia,
3). penulis paling sedikit berasal dari 4 (empat) institusi,
4). editor sesuai dengan bidang ilmunya,
5). memiliki ISBN,
6). diterbitkan oleh lembaga ilmiah yang bereputasi, yaitu organisasi perguruan tinggi, dan lembaga penelitian.

b. Untuk Prosiding Seminar Internasional
1). ditulis dalam bahasa resmi PBB (Arab, I`nggris, Perancis, Rusia, Spanyol dan Tiongkok),
2). editor berasal dari berbagai negara sesuai dengan bidang ilmunya,
3). penulis paling sedikit berasal dari 4 (empat) negara,
4). memiliki ISBN.
