TEACHING AND LEARNING USING E-LEARNING by Ignatius Septo Pramesworo

One of the activities which can be used nowadays for teaching and learning process is E-learning.

E-learning as the facility, in some cases, can make the students easy to study. Most of the students appreciate this system. Students can submit their assignment easier. This method can be faster than if they write down on paper. E-learning is also provided by due date. It makes the students be more discipline to submit their task. In addition e-learning will minimalize the use of paper. In Indonesia situation, Open University of Univeritas Terbuka has been providing e-learning facilities for its sutdents.        The Indonesia Government allows universities to use e-learning system. Republic Act no. 20 of 2003 on National Education System, article 31 states that the distance education is able to be hold on all lines, levels and types of education. Moreover, distance education organized in various forms, modes and coverage hold facilities and services supported by learning and assessment system which ensures the quality of graduates in accordance with national education standards. The form of distance education includes educational programs in writing (correspondence), radio, audio / video, TV and / or network-based computer. So e-learning system in Indonesia is a part of distance learning programs that the government has established. In its initial formation, e-learning is used as one of the systems applied by open university. It is stated that e-learning system in Indonesia can also substitute the position of a lecturer in front of the class.

e-learning 1

Many lecturers in Perbanas Institute use this system to teach their students. Some of them because of their jobs outside or their needs can not attend the class to teach their students. The students can study the material by e-learning. In fact, this method makes the lecturers leave more than 50% of the class. In average most of the students become lazier to come to the class if their lecturers are used to study using e-learning in the class. E-learning in this idea gives a bad influence to students. One lecturer who has also a position used this e-learning system when he left his class for five times. He also provides materials for students to do as homework, in fact, when the students ask for feedback, this lecturer could not give the feedback because of his job he never checked the students’ works.

In Perbanas Institute the implementation of e-learning for this type of lecturer is not effective as a study method.      Perbanas Institute must be active and proactive to socialize to their students and lecturers the purpose of e-learning system. In reality both most of the lecturers and the students still do not understand the purpose of e-learning system and how to use e-learning well. A team that is responsible with the e-learning system and training must be formed. It is not just a fun idea it should be done seriously. Harvard University and MIT University are examples of universities which put e-learning system is just a complementary of the teaching and learning materials in the curriculum. However, finally e-leaning is simply a tool for students easier to study outside the class and it is not only as a substitute way if the lecturer cannot teach in front of the class. Hopefully the idea of e-learning system either in western universities or Indonesian universities will not be confused anymore.

Please help me! DO YOU RECOGNIZE YOUR STUDENTS IN YOUR CLASS?

Is this a simple question? No, I don’t think so. For me, this is a difficult question. Why? There will be lots of answers for the question and I – Mr. Septo, an English lecturer in Perbanas Institute – want to ask your help. I need your contribution to answer the title above or I would clarify the question again into “Does Mr. Septo recognize his students in his class?”
If you are my students in this semester OR if you are my students from previous semesters, would you like to help me by writing a paragraph only or maybe more to give your opinion about me? You will be a helpful and kind person because you will share your ideas about me, my teaching approach, or my style to know my students.
Ok. Thanks for you who have shared and contributed the idea. God bless you always.

Overall activity takes place smoothly thanks to good cooperation between the school and the ULBI team and English lecturers of Perbanas Institute. SMK Taruna Sakti Party Purwakarta commanded by Mr. Eko Bagus Kurniawan, S. Pd has an active role in providing support to a variety of forms. Similarly, participants who enthusiastically followed the coaching process and TOEFL-Like from the beginning to the end. The success of this program can also be seen on the achievement of pre-defined indicators of success.

In an effort to improve the quality of human resources in education, mastery of foreign languages, particularly English, is a very important thing. This is based on various considerations. By imposing a vision that one of them is to put forward the procurement of ability to speak English, a school has committed to enter into a realm of management that is no longer based on the standards and demands of local quality and require human resources who are able to understand the ins and outs of the information required in the domain so that it can support their performance in realizing the commitment of the institution. Therefore, the efforts to improve English proficiency for students of SMK Taruna Sakti Purwakarta are evidence of the seriousness of a school to realize the commitments already proclaimed in the school’s vision.

Coaching Grammar Clinic and mentoring TOEFL-Like is an effort that can be done to improve the mastery of English for students of SMK Taruna Sakti Purwakarta. The training materials provided include basic skills that are useful to support the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing is simple. Steps to be taken by SMK Taruna Sakti Purwakarta to improve the ability of English for students can be continued by organizing extracurricular programs, consultations and discussions with the relevant parties at the school. This can be followed by an ongoing collaboration with lecturers of English, led by Ms. Adelina, SS., M. Hum. from ULBI PERBANAS Institute Jakarta. Eventually, the school will get more benefits from next collaborations. Instead, the Perbanas Institute lecturers Jakarta can also fulfill their role in applying knowledge through community service.
Given the magnitude of the benefits that can be derived from PKM activity like this, English lecturers PERBANAS Institute Jakarta consider schools (SMA and SMK) can perform similar activities, or with a variety of forms and methods, by involving P3M PERBANAS Institute Jakarta. SMK Taruna Sakti Purwakarta should maintain cooperation with the ULBI Perbanas Institute Jakarta that has been nurtured well so far. P3M and ULBI should also maintain and increase its commitment in implementing the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, particularly the Community Service (PKM).

THE USE OF E-LEARNING FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCESS

e-learning 1

One of facilities that should be applied in formal education e.g. university is called E-learning. It is necessary to be understood that e-learning is able to be defined as a learning system with the use of electronics. Usually this learning uses computers. Learning system by using e-learning system can be provided as part or all of the materials being taught. For the whole materials, e-learning system is initially given in an open university. As for formal education, e-learning system is given only as a supplement outside the teaching and learning process in the classroom. E-learning is a media electronic to support the students’ facility of study. E-learning is equipped as a forum of discussion, to collect the task, and giving materials. E-learning can be an innovation to provide students’ means of learning. In addition e-learning can make the students easy to study everywhere.

A university has to have an official site that all the students are able to sign and log in if the process of teaching and learning uses e-learning system. Based on that site some of the lecturers can communicate with their students. The lecturers also use e-learning in different ways of teaching. Some of them use e-learning as a supplement of their teaching materials. Others use e-learning as a substitute way if the lecturers could not come to the class, then the process of teaching and learning is replaced by the tasks given to the students. Some other lecturers use e-learning system in the way that students have to read the materials, perform the exercises based on the materials, and submit the results to the lecturer. The lecturer checks the students’ works, returns the works, and discuss the works. Based on the students’ works, the lecturer could give the score. The process of e-learning system will be discussed in paragraphs below.

In e-learning usually lecturers give the students some introduction about the lesson that will be studied in the class. The students discuss the materials or problem that are requested by lecturers. The students can write something that relate to the topic on the discussion. In addition the students can give some explanation about the lesson. Then, the students can post it in e-learning. All of the members can read that posting. In addition the reader must give take an opinion on the other students’ explanation.

In Indonesia situation, Open University of Univeritas Terbuka has been providing e-learning facilities for its students.

DO LECTURERS NEED PREPARATION?

DO LECTURERS NEED PREPARATION?

Teaching or lecturing well is not possible without adequate preparation. Indeed, there are several teachers or lecturers, who are able to wake up, to wash my face, and instantly to be able to teach it well. However, it seems not much teachers or lecturers look like it. There are some lecturers who come to the class without any preparations. Yes, they know the materials that they teach. For some lecturers, the materials will always be the same from time to time, on the other hand other are motivated to dig out new teaching materials and methods. Preparation well before teaching is a form of a lecturer to respect himself and his students. Although teaching for only 100 minutes in a class, it is possible for some lecturers to prepare themselves for more than two hours, or even two days.

Why does a lecturer need more than two hour preparation? Although one of the tasks of teaching faculty, it does not mean that a lecturer knows all that will be lectured or taught for a long time. Science continues to evolve. Some even develops very fast. To participate in this development, and provide relevant for students, the lecturer must always learn. In wikipedia, human learning may occur as part of education, personal development, schooling, or training. It may be goal-oriented and may be aided by motivation. The study of how learning occurs is part of educational psychology, neuropsychology, learning theory, and pedagogy. Learning may occur as a result of habituation or classical conditioning, seen in many animal species, or as a result of more complex activities such as play, seen only in relatively intelligent animals. Therefore, it could be stated that learning needs motivation so that it can be a habit for the learner. A lecturer, it goes without saying, has to learn and provide himself with his teaching materials before he stands in front of his class. In fact, without having and mastering teaching materials properly, the quality of learning in the classroom does not seem to be the maximum.

It is strange if there is a lecturer teaching a course not relating his materials with the nowadays condition. The transparency of the material in class becomes more with the ideas of information technology development. Lecturers can be stated failed and old-fashioned if he does not use the nowadays materials. Preparation of a lecturer in teaching can be done in many ways. First, most of lecturers usually read textbooks that record the development of the latest science to be taught. Books are often not sufficiently advanced, sometimes a lecturer needs to be equipped with a scientific journal. A lecturer should prepare teaching materials that can be absorbed by the student. This material may include textbooks, hands-out, slide presentations, or journal / parts books / magazines scientific / other relevant materials. This material will greatly assist students in understanding the course content.

Moreover, a lecturer should prepare scenarios in the classroom. This scenario is not to be written, but how time is used in the classroom, how students are involved in the process, and how the teaching materials supplied, must have been unthinkable. But if a lecturer wants to write, it will be very good and help to transfer knowledge to his students. This becomes very important, if a lecturer says that he applies a student-centered learning.

The use of easily understood language also needs to be considered. A lecturer should remember that not all students come to the class with the same maturity level. There are lots of examples about leveling in education, they are level of knowledge, level of abilities, etc. In Perbanas Institute situation, for instance, an English lecturer usually teaches in a class that consists of 40 students. They have different levels of English ability. Perbanas Institute, likes other levels of education in Indonesia, does not want to put its students according to the students English language abilities. Therefore, an English language lecturer must work harder, for example, he must be able to deliver the materials by using simple language, even some other lecturers use Indonesian language in order to make the students understand the materials taught. Here, it can be stated that a class is unique and the teaching methods used cannot be the same from one class to another class. The materials can be the same but the way how a lecturer to deliver the materials in a class is an art. That’s why some says teaching is an art.
